I realize these days everyone is pressed for time (including me), and doesn't have time to read in-depth newsletters. This week we’re trying something a little different, to see if it saves us both time. Even if everyone loves it we won't use this format every week, because some stories need the traditional treatment. But I’m very curious how you like it. Please let me know if you like the usual letter format or this new picture version (below) better?

Thanks for your feedback. In addition, please support our advertisers (see above – in fact, don’t just look, click!), and use our search engines (look to the left) when shopping around for the best flight, hotel, and car rental deals! Plus, don't forget to check out our weekly specials.

ROMA!

Last week we left off in Capri. From there we took a 45-minute, 12 euro (€) ferry to Napoli (Naples).

There are two ports in Naples: Mergellina and Molo Beverello. The latter is much more convenient, with more departures and a larger selection of ferries and hydrofoils.

We jumped in a 10-minute, 13 euro taxi to the train station, then took a Euro Star (high-speed) train to Roma. Like impatient, spoiled Americans we paid extra for the high speed train, because it departed 30 minutes earlier and is a bit more comfortable. The EuroStar from Naples to Rome takes 1:54, and costs €32 for first class, €21.21 for coach. The InterCity (slow train) takes 1:57, and costs €22.21 for 1st class, €16.53 for coach. Because I had a EuroRail Pass, I only had to pay a €12 supplement for the high speed train. But if I have the option next time I’ll save the money, because the EuroStar train was over an hour late. If we had taken the InterCity we would not only have saved some cash, but arrived a lot earlier.

In Rome we checked into the 4-star Emperor Palace Hotel.

As you can see, the hotel is really nice

and the staff is friendly.

We got upgraded to a junior suite. The couch pulled out to a bed, so it was like having separate rooms.

Say hello to my room! The problem with Europe is that most hotels use twin mattresses, which they put together to make a king-size bed. (That way they can also configure the room with two beds). Fortunately this bed was comfortable to sleep on; however, in many places they are not.

The two things I didn't like about the Emperor Palace Hotel were the location (three blocks from a main street), and the fact that the bathroom lacked a shower curtain. I hate hotels that try to be chic by not having something to block the water, because for me is creates a huge mess. Luckily I didn't have to mop the flood each time I took a shower. I think we called housekeeping so many times, they’ve now have installed shower curtains in every room.

The bathroom was stocked with full-size Etro bath products, a nice bonus.

No need to go out for breakfast. The Emperor Palace Hotel’s excellent buffet is included in the room price (as is often the case in of Europe). Rates start at €250.00 a night.
