Beverly Hills Hotel
I was back in Beverly Hills and this time I was at the world-renowned Beverly Hills Hotel for the Melbourne Cup party. The
Melbourne Cup is Australia's steroid version of the Kentucky Derby except that it's older, reaches far more people and it literally stops a nation. I had no idea how big a deal the Melbourne Cup was but after seeing videos and hearing stories, I can't wait to attend the next one. It's always held on our election day, the first Tuesday in November and this year it celebrates its 150th anniversary. The state of Victoria and the country of Australia are really rolling out the red carpet by doing all kinds of advertising campaigns and promotions. For one, they're bringing back a replica of the original trophy which they stopped making in 1930. This year's trophy is valued at $140,000 USD but the race prize money is $5.5 million USD! Top horses and jockeys from around the world will be participating. FYI: The sponsor is ... who else? Emirates Airlines, which seems to be a part of all the major international sporting events including the Americas Cup, Fifa Cup and Breeders Cup, just to name a few. BTW: I got a chance to hold the cup and meet astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Check out my slideshow from the night.
