Our flight back to LAX was easy and relaxing. This was one
of the few times I did not take out my computer and work. Instead,
I just laid back and fell a sleep watching the movie Gold Member in my phat
seat. What's funny about that is, the next day; Amber Airplane had "Mini
Me" on her flight. She said he was so tiny, that he literally was
only up to her knee cap. During boarding he stood on the floor in between
the First Class seats so know one would see him, and no one did. Also
on the plane was an abusive passenger who started yelling at her for no apparent
reason. Upon deplaning, “Mini Me" said, "Amber, I almost jumped over
my seat and beat him up for you". Verne (Mini Me) is now second
to Johnny Jet, as her favorite passenger.
The big party we went to this week was the after party for the American
Music Awards. Our good friends from
Teen People
hosted it at a bar called Ivar, near Hollywood Boulevard. The party
had lots of stars. There was
N'SYNC
to
Hugh Heffner
. (Heff strolled in with 7 (SEVEN) girls. They were
all holding hands and Heff was fittingly in the middle. When he walked
by I said "Uncle Hugh, where have you been?" He just laughed and went
upstairs directly to the VIP room. You know you are at a great party
when they hire one of the top performers to give a little private concert.
This year they had
Nelly
rock the house. Although they had plenty of food, it would've
not been right to be only 3 blocks a way from Roscoe's and not stop by for
a late night snack of
fried chicken and waffles
.
Well, after writing about Raffaello’s a few weeks’ ago, a reader recommended that I try Neil's Pasta and Seafood only a few blocks away from Raffaello’s in San Pedro. This reader emailed me to say he arranged with Neil to let him know that I was coming and that I would be bringing the ultimate Italian connoisseur, my Pops! Well, it turns out Neil is from the same island in Italy (Ischia) as my grandparents. Therefore, he immediately hit it off with my Dad and took the menus away from us and started to bring dish after dish out to our table. Every time the waiter dropped a meal off my Dad looked at me with this stuffed look and said " Is this the last one ?" Neil's is a great place for an Italian feast. The food, service, and decor are excellent. The best part is the bread and the spread for it (tomato sauce, mascarpone cheese, and parmesan). It's worth it to go there just for that. We went twice in the past week, once for lunch and the other for dinner . I recommend lunch because dinner is a bit pricey for it's location. Info: Address: 383 W 5th St., San Pedro, CA tel. 310.548.3495
More Italian food: another one of my Dad's new favorite Italian restaurants
C
& O
in Marina Del Rey. He doesn't love it for the food, although it
is good and the portions are
HUGE
(including half orders)! He and most people love it for the
atmosphere,
killer garlic rolls
and price. You have to love a place where everyone joins in and
sings "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's Amore" (On
"that's Amore" everyone toasts including all the waiters, so its non stop
drinking the cheap house wine). We went twice this past week,
including once for my good friend
Andy's engagement
party. Guess how much it cost per person for a
party of 12
? Nope, guess lower... lower... $15.00, can you believe
that? Another place we went to in Marina Del Rey was
Jerry's Famous Deli
. My Dad wanted a Reuben and this place is a great Jewish
delicatessen that has locations all around L.A. The food is always
good, the menu is bigger than the Cheesecake Factory’s, and the
Matza Ball
soup is to die for, or bring you back to life!
Good News! Remember my horror
Travelocity story
? Well, after months of exchanging emails with Travelocity's
senior people, they finally made good. Travelocity refunded my $70.00
and sent me an acceptable apology. Don't get me wrong, I still would've
rather had everything go as originally planned, but at least they saved face.
This whole ordeal taught me a valuable lesson. Don't expect everything
is all set just because you pressed the purchase button on the internet
and received an email from the company. Make sure you read the fine
print and then call the airline, hotel, car rental, or cruise (whatever you’ve
booked) to make sure it went through.
Better News! Guess who called me up the other day and said they were getting on a plane in an hour to come visit me? That’s right! My sister Carol and my niece and nephew! How great is that? Monica, my sister's good friend talked her into coming because it was a holiday weekend and Tom (Carol's husband) was away in Paris. Monica comes out to L.A. all the time because her husband works out here. Since their kids are best friends with my sister's, traveling together would make for a smooth trip for the kids and the adults. We decided not to tell my Dad, and instead we surprised him. I asked my Dad if he wouldn't mind coming to the airport with me to pick up Monica because she needed a ride. Well, operation "Surprise the hell out of my Dad" worked. Monica and her husband came out first with my nephew in tow. My Dad was shocked to see him and thought that they just delivered Johnny to me for the weekend. Then we walked towards baggage claim and out popped my sister off of the elevator along with my niece .
What a great weekend we had and I will tell you all about it next
week. Aloha!

TIP OF THE WEEK:
Buying two seats is an incredible bargain. And while occupying two coach
seats isn't as comfortable as sitting in first or business class, the two-seat
scenario offers plenty of personal space and a modicum of privacy. But
be warned: You can't just purchase two tickets under your name, walk up
to the ticket counter and claim your spaces. You or your travel agent must--repeat,
must--call the airline in advance, alert it to your intentions, and then
buy the tickets via phone. Most carriers will code the second ticket purchase
as an "extra seat"--some will even assign it to a Mr. E. Seat--and tie
it to your itinerary. And be sure to arrange for advance seat assignments--the
seats must be next to each other, of course--at the time you call the airline.

GOOD TO KNOW!
Johnny Jet and Richard Roe have teamed up to personally escort small
groups to locations around the world. The first tour will be Italy
May 2003. A second tour to Italy will occur in September/October.
Each tour will be 14 days and will escort approximately 14 people, including
Richard and Johnny.
The advantage of these tours, over all others, is the personal
attention given to every detail by Richard and Johnny. The emphasis
will be on FUN!
We chose Italy because of the incredible wonders and diversity
this destination offers. We will not race from place to place;
rather take time to truly absorb all of this country's riches.
The sights, food, the people, combined with the personal attentions
given by Richard and Johnny will make for an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
Richard Roe has traveled extensively around the world in the
past 25 years. He has traveled to 60 countries on 5 continents and has
lived a total of 4 years in Europe including all of 2001 in Italy, preparing
for this tour. Richard has 3 children, and currently lives in Manhattan
Beach, CA. Richard recently completed the production, marketing and promotion
for the Oscar nominated feature length documentary film "Pop & Me".
"Pop & Me" is the story of Richard and his son Chris, who embark on
a journey around the world to 26 countries in the United States, Europe,
the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, meeting
with other fathers and sons. "Pop & Me" won 6 festivals and was bought
and distributed by MGM and is currently available at video stores and other
retail outlets. Richard has appeared on 20 nationally broadcast television
shows, including Oprah, The Early Show, CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, and the BBC.

Week #1. Rome, Florence, and the Etruscan towns of Orvieto,
Savano, and Pitigliano. Three wonderful days and nights seeing the incredible
sights of Rome; including the Coliseum, Roman Ruins, Spanish Steps, Pantheon
Trevi Fountain, Borghese Palace, and more. Two days in Florence. Including
the incredible museums and a day trip to Siena and the famous Chianti Region.
Then, two days in the Etruscan towns which will surprise and delight
tour members. These town are almost unknown to tourists and we
guarantee you will be Amazed at what you will see.
Week #2: The "Cinque Terre" Tour: These five hillsides,
ancient towns are approximately 60 miles South of Portofino, and is
becoming one of the most adored travel destinations in the world.
This area is famous for its hiking, wines, and the invention of Pesto.
We will be based in Lerici, an ancient Roman fishing village near the Cinque
Terre. This is the town Richard lived while in Italy, so we will
take you to sights and restaurants way off the beaten tourist path.
In addition to hiking in the Cinque Terre, day trips will be made to
Portofino, Lucca (amazing!) Carrara (where we will walk in some paths
of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo as this is where their marble came
from), Pisa, and ancient medieval hill villages, to sample the local
customs and food!
Tour # 2 May 16-30 2003
The Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri. This area is absolutely
stunning. In the summer months it is too crowded with tourists,
so this is why we will be there in May. We will base in Positano
for 4 nights. Richard says "In my 25 years of traveling the world,
I have never seen - in the evening - a more romantic place". We will
visit Sorrento, and the Roman hilltop village of Ravello. A day trip
to Pompeii will be one of the terrific highlights. We'll take a 30
minute ferry ride to Capri. Folks this place is flat out amazing!
It also has what we feel to be the greatest luxury stores. There
are many museums and of course a ride through the Blue Grotto. Truly
a spectacular experience: Sicily. In November of 2001, Richard traveled
throughout this incredible island, and says "Sicily is the best surprise
I've had in my travels, and I have no idea why it isn't heavily promoted.
Perhaps tourists fear "The Mafia". Well, if this exists, it makes Sicily
even safer. A friendly place to visit. Egyptian, Phoenician,
Carthaginian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine masterpieces of architecture.
We will visit Palermo, Erici, Marsala, Selinunte, Agriegento, Piazza
Armerina, Syracuse, Taormina (near Mt. Etna), and Cefalu. We promise
you an amazing experience!
