WHERE'S JOHNNY JET ?

Last week I wrote you from NY/CT just before heading out to JFK to fly back to LAX. Well guess where I am now?  Back where I started from.

Before going to California, Amber Airplane and I went out to dinner with my cousin AJ and his girlfriend Jamie (She plays Meadow on the Soprano's). She asks “do you guys want to come to the Soprano’s set with me tomorrow?” We looked at each other, and said is “water wet?” The next morning we jumped in a taxi which cost us $9 to go across the 59th St. Bridge to the studio located in Queens. It's in the same building where they film Sex In The City, and a bunch of movies I can't remember except for Zoolander.  It was a sunny warm day over there and the set was huge, not to mention hot (The AC was broken and those stage lights are like space heaters). There are so many different warehouses for all the sets that it becomes confusing for a first time visitor. Jamie was a sport though, showing us around and introducing us to the actors and crew. Did we have a good time? Let's just put it this way: How many people get to play pool in the BADA BING ROOM ? How sweet is that? Here's the house that's supposed to be in NJ (upstairs and downstairs   are side by side, not on top of each other). We watched her film a scene then we spilt to go to Connecticut.  Getting a taxi from Long Island City to go back to Manhattan is almost impossible, so we took the much quicker, cheaper, and wiser mode of transportation: The NYC subway.   It takes 8 minutes and brings you right to Grand Central Station.

We went out to Connecticut because my Mom's Cousin passed away on Memorial Day which was only fitting because he was a WWII hero.  We stayed a couple extra days to attend his funeral which was on Thursday. It was real tough for me especially because it brought back so many unpleasant memories from my Mom's service: same funeral home and cemetery.  >Deep sigh<

Believe it or not, I do have a funny story from the funeral for you.  It turned out my Dad was also leaving from JFK Thursday afternoon, so we coordinated our flight with his so we could car pool. Well, we had a little miscommunication, which is not unusual in my family.  I thought my Dad and I had agreed that he was going to park his car at JFK and pick it up a couple of days later but, NOPE.  He decided on (without telling me) driving back from Erie, PA instead. Guess what that meant? Our flight was leaving in less than 2 hours and JFK is 42 miles from where we were in Connecticut. It was too late to call for a car service, and this is how it all played out:  I whisper to my Dad at the funeral (My Dad is practically deaf so whispering is more like talking normal but with a deeper voice) "Psssst...How are we getting to JFK?" He gives me a triple look with his eyes and mouth wide open and says "You didn't get us a car service or arrange a ride?" I said "HELLO? You never told me you decided not to drive". He whispers "How the heck are we going to get to the airport?" I said "I dunno" (keep in mind that getting to JFK is more of hassle for the people from CT then it is to fly somewhere).  The next thing I notice is my Dad raising his eyebrows while whispering to people (I knew that meant he was up to no good). "Hey you want a take us to the airport in 10 minutes?" People were looking at him like he had the plague, including me. Would you believe if I told you he even ask our cousin who had just lost her husband? Is he on Crack? It definitely was a scene from a movie.  We'll, my Dad's charm worked and he talked my aunt into taking us.

Our flight to LAX was the quickest ever for me; 4 hours and 45 minutes. We were 1 hour early and we were upgraded to Business Class! That was great because United has been using their 767-300 series which have brand new seats with extended leg room. United’s Business Class also include personal monitors so you can choose between 4 movies and the live GPS map. That makes flying a real treat.

Now, for the Big Day: Friday, May 31 was my birthday. I woke up with my lingering cold and stayed in the house most of the day because I wanted to save all my energy. I did go out to get a haircut because I was taping a new travel show with Joel Widzer , who is the author of Penny Pincher's Guide to Luxury Travel . The television taping went much longer than expected and when we showed up to Encounter (the restaurant that looks like a spaceship in the middle of LAX), they said the kitchen had just closed. Can you believe they close at 9pm on a Friday? That's what time places open in NYC. No worries, we went home and Amber Airplane had all kinds of presents for me including a new bike and a Peanut Butter and Chocolate Ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins!

Monday morning I was back on an airplane to JFK.

JOHNNY JET QUIZ:
Which do you think costs more?  To NYC from JFK: a car service or a Taxi? If you sided with Amber Airplane and picked the Yellow Cab , you're WRONG! They are the same price during off peak hours. Both charge $35, plus toll and tip. If you use a car service such as Carmel (212-666-6666) or Tel Aviv (212-777-7777), you can also pay by credit card.  These are both budget car services and they are not that reliable, but I have learned how to deal with them since I am cheap.  I used Carmel the other day and they tell you to call them only after you have picked up your luggage and then they will meet you outside within 5-10 minutes. My advice is don't wait. Call them right when you get off the plane because they usually take 10-15 minutes and by then you should have your luggage. Also bring some air freshener because the dude who picked me up didn't believe in deodorant. He tried to put the windows up for the AC, I said "OH NO", These bad boys are staying down! If you don't have any Wizard, or cologne handy, then I advise to act like your dog. Keep that nose out the window.

TIP OF THE WEEK:
To avoid illness, select your meals carefully. (FROM THE BBC)
All raw food is subject to contamination. Particularly in areas where hygiene and sanitation are inadequate, travellers should avoid: salads,  uncooked vegetables, and unpasteurised milk and dairy products such as cheese.
Eat only food that has been cooked and is still hot, or fruit you've peeled yourself. Remember: boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it. Undercooked and raw meat, fish, and shellfish may carry various intestinal pathogens. Cooked food that has been allowed to stand lukewarm for several hours may provide a fertile place for bacterial growth - and should be thoroughly reheated before serving. Street food vendors have been associated with increased risk of tummy trouble.
Some fish and shellfish can contain poisonous biotoxins, even when well-cooked. The most common type of fish poisoning in travellers is ciguatera fish poisoning. Barracuda is the most toxic fish and should always be avoided. Red snapper, grouper, sea bass, and other tropical reef fish contain the toxin at unpredictable times of the year.

Donations Down, Angels Grounded
A DRAMATIC DROP IN FREQUENT-FLYER MILEAGE DONATIONS to wish-granting foundations that cater to ailing children is making it difficult for those organizations to respond to requests for assistance. According to an Associated Press report, the decline in mileage donations began about three years ago when many airlines eliminated expiration dates on accumulated miles. A subsequent drop in business travel since Sept. 11 has left many wish-granting organizations struggling to find ways to subsidize travel for families with ailing children. More than half of all wish requests involve travel. Florida's Disney World is one of the most requested destinations. Organizations that accept mileage donations include M ake-A-Wish Foundation . Starlight Children's Foundation and A Wish With Wings .
