WHERE'S JOHNNY JET ?
Didn't have a chance to read last week's newsletter? Click here!
It's been another busy week of travel and updating Johnny Jet.  If this column has some errors please excuse me, I have been locked up in my office for 3 days clicking away at links to make sure they are all working and that they didn't sell out to some porn site.  The good news is all of Johnny Jet's pages have been completed and porn free!  Well, almost, we still have the city portlets to do.  I need to take a little break because you know you've been working too hard when you're having nightmares about dead links.

This past week I went back to NYC for the first TravelComExpo which was co-chaired by our buddy Henry H. Harteveldt   from Forrester research.  It was held at the New York Hilton which is centrally located for me between Grand Central and my apartment (The two places I visit the most, well, besides my favorite pizza joint).  The highlight of the two-day conference was listening to Steve Forbes , who basically said he believed that the times will continue to be challenging because of the current situations in the Middle East and Asia, but within a couple of quarters, the stock market will strengthen and thus causing the economy to improve.  We'll see if he's right.  The conference was well attended.   Most of the big guns were there and willing to share some of their company statistics.  It's interesting to hear those stats and where they think the internet is heading.

While in NY, I was fortunate to meet with some of the industry top dogs.  I bumped into Tom Parsons from Bestafres.com.  Had drinks with the best business travel writer in the business; Joe Brancatelli , and lunch with Mark Orwoll from Travel & Leisure Magazine.  Man was I was lucky!  These guys are the equivalents to Tom Hanks in the travel biz.

Now, don't think all I did was hang out in some conference room, because I DIDN'T.  When you go to a conference in NYC or any city for that matter your gonna go out and have some real fun and sample the local flavor with your colleagues.  I spent most of my nights with my friends Nick and Leslie who work over at Smarterliving.com .  The first night we went out to a great family-style Italian restaurant on the upper East side called Tony Di Napoli's .  My cousin AJ and Jamie joined us which was a good thing because the portions were huge and AJ's a big eater like me.

Remember that band (LMNT) I was traveling with last year?  Well their debut album, titled ALL SIDES came out on Tuesday and we went to their record release party at the Suede Leather lounge on W21st.  The party was pumping and I ran into a bunch of old friends , who we also saw the next night at Teen People's summer beach bash at One51.

My work was finished in NY, so I took the train out to Connecticut to see my family.  My brother called me on my cell and says if you want to see me come down to the courthouse because I'm doing interviews about the Skakel trial .  Right when I walked into the Norwalk courthouse (which is 3 blocks away from Dad's office) I see all these lawyers and reporters with their ears to the door of the court room.  It turns out the jury was reading the verdict.  It was mayhem in there, then all the families were shuffled to a private room as they walked by with tears.  They didn't allow cameras in the building, but outback it looked like the OJ trial, there were cameras and photographers everywhere.  Their had to be over a 100.  I walked outside to find my brother in the wave of reporters and my cell phone rings.  My cousin, Dennis, in Chicago says, "Are you at the Skakel trial?"  I said, "Yeah, how do you know? "  He says, "You're on CNN right now."  I said, "Really?"  Luckily, I was wearing a Johnny Jet t-shirt so I turned my back and gave a little flash then walked away.  You would be amazed at how many people saw that.  Johnny Jet wants prime time baby, not some passer by at a murder trial.

That afternoon I went to Long Shore in Westport which is a great place to go for drinks after work or to get married ....  This public golf course/restaurant really depicts how beautiful Connecticut can be.  Later my buddy Mike and I had dinner with my Dad and my brother at  wAmber Jack'shich is another great place for dinner or hanging at the bar.  It's located in South Norwalk (SONO), which is where I grew up.  Norwalk's a small town, and not that many people move away so you are bound to bump into people you know .  I ran into the girls from Adventure Connections and Stacy who's the CEO of Weblope.com .

I slept at my sister Georgette's house which meant I wouldn't be sleeping alone .  Saturday was a big sporting day for the Tri State area.  We had the Yankees playing the S.F. Giants, the Nets vs. Lakers, and the 134th running of the Belmont Stakes to see if War Emblem could be the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown.  If I was spending the day with my Dad, which event do you think we went to?  That's right!   The Belmont Stakes .  I thought it would be sold out, but my Dad said never, and he was right.  If you want to go next year just walk in and spend $4 to enter.  But if you want to go to the Turf Club you better have some connections, and I guess my Dad did.  He surprised us with a great corner table.  I thought it was going to be a lucky day when I saw the table number was 31, my favorite number, but it brought no luck to me since I lost every race.  I think I'm turning into my Dad, every horse I bet to win came in second, and when I decided to bet it to place (which means comes in second or first) it came in third.  What's going on around here?
The Turf Club is by membership only and was quiet and stuffy, but the food was excellent and the view was right at the finish line .  The Turf Club in Belmont doesn't compare to Millionaire's Row at Kentucky Derby though.  In Kentucky, you can just feel the excitement, and in NY I didn't quite feel the same energy.  The positive about being upstairs as opposed to clubhouse area is they don't have long lines to place a bet.  Next year I recommend going downstairs so you can wear shorts and hang out with the real New Yorkers.  These guys are passionate down there and everyone was in the War Emblem spirit .  People were jumping up and down yelling and swearing at the horses and then throwing their ticket stubs in disgust.  They weren't afraid to show their emotions.

Guess where I watched the last race?  In the Red Carpet Club at JFK.  I jumped in a taxi that took me 9 miles down the LIE and cost 20 bucks.  I arrived just in time to catch the last race and a flight to LAX.
