I hope y'all had a fun and safe 4th of July, as I did. Instead
of traveling to see friends and family, I had stayed home and
had them come to me :-). It's nice to take a little break
once in awhile and do nothing but hang out at the beach. My
cousins from Chicago picked a good time to visit because Manhattan/Hermosa
Beach really gets pumping around this holiday. Although, I
must admit, it wasn't as crazy as it used to be. I guess since
housing costs have gone through the roof, most of the young partiers
moved away. But now you can actually walk down the Strand without
someone's tire jabbing your ankle.
What to do when visitors come see you in L.A.? Most people would probably show them all the tourist sites. Well, I was lucky, because they have been here before I didn't have to do the usual L.A. tour. So, we skipped the first round of sightseeing in LA: Venice Beach, Universal Studios, Disneyland, Universal City Walk, Hollywood & Vine, Rodeo Drive.............. The only tourist trap we visited was Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade to shop and see the street acts . Oh yeah, we also took a drive up the coast to Malibu and had dinner with some friends on the beach.
On Thursday, July 4th, we took a stroll down the Strand in MB/HB and went to a bunch of parties. The Strand, BTW, is a sidewalk near the beach where everyone walks, rollerblades, runs, and bicycles..... (Most out-of-towners, especially from the East Coast, call it the boardwalk but there aren't any boards.) Everyone was out and almost everyone was dressed in red , white, and blue . Our first stop was Hermosa where we went to see the local Iron Man contest. This is not your normal Iron Man; this is a run a mile, paddle a mile, and drink a six pack of beer. We arrived late but caught the finish line .
When the sun finally came out, we just relaxed on the beach and played volleyball and more volleyball. After going for a dip in the 68 degree water, (it's a lot warmer than Alaska!), we went up the street to a great party at my buddy Brent's house. He has some great food because he hired Taco's Pioneros which is run by a guy named Edgar Pineda who provides an awesome service (I can't wait to throw a party and hire him). For a little over $400, he will come out with his trailer and make 500 authentic Mexican taco's; chicken, beef, and pork (the other white meat) and bring all the fix ins(rice, beans, lettuce, cilantro, radish, peppers, HOT sauces.......). If you're interested, his number is: 562-650-6430, tell him Johnny Jet sent you and if he says, "WHO?????", say, "You know, the guy who ate all those tacos on the 4th."
We didn't stop there. Wobbling down the Strand, we ran into all sorts of people: to my buddy Joe Lewis , to the dude from the movie Pop and Me , to Tara Reid from American Pie, to the hand puppets from Pets.com. Everyone was out and celebrating our beautiful country, especially this year. It was a total bummer to hear that only ten miles away, there was a shooting at LAX.
We went by the party at the 90210 house , then to our buddy Mark's who won the prize for most festive cake . Night time came and can you believe Manhattan Beach doesn't have 4th of July fireworks? Nope! The town would argue that they save them for mid-December, when they have the annual Christmas show. That was fine with my cousins because we had our own illegal fireworks.
The staying home thing didn't last too long. I am now somewhere
in the midwest sweating my you know what off.

GOOD TO KNOW!
Raising the Curtain
on London's Summer Theater (From
Rudy Maxa
)
For many visitors, no trip
to England's capital is complete without catching at
least one show. With 50 commercial theaters and another 50
smaller ones up and running most of the time, London offers
an overwhelming number of options. Last month, I sat in the
front row of "My One and Only," a vehicle for Gershwin tunes.
But I was in town for only a couple of days, so I asked Susan
Davidson, a transplanted Londoner who visits home frequently,
to prepare a guide to what's great right now for readers planning
to visit London this summer.
In the category of musicals...
London's hottest ticket is
"My Fair Lady." >From the Greek myth to George Bernard
Shaw's play, to the 1958 Lerner and Lowe musical with Julie
Andrews and Rex Harrison to the 1964 movie starring Audrey Hepburn,
the story of Pygmalion and the lovely woman he molds never fails
to enchant its audiences. The current production is no exception.
Much of the praise for this
production goes, deservedly, to its very talented director,
Trevor Nunn. Matthew Bourne's choreography is energetic and
sophisticated. And Anthony Ward's sets and costumes, particularly
in the scene where Professor Higgins takes Eliza to the
horse races at Ascot, are nothing short of exquisite. Ordinarily,
tickets to London shows are not hard to come by, but advance
planning is advisable in the case of "My Fair Lady," showing at
the Theater Royal Drury Lane, a magnificent building on the edge
of Covent Garden. Either call the box office, open 24/7, 494-5000,
(the country code for England is 44; the city code for London is 207),
or book tickets on-line at
www.myfairladythemusical.com
.
