What a week
I had. I can honestly say I have never
played golf
five days in a
row until now (I don't even think I have played 2 days in a row). It
all began when I jumped on a red eye flight from LA to ORD. I
wasn't thrilled to do an all-nighter because when a flight is as short
as the LA-Chicago one (3hours and 15 minutes) then I'm always shot for
the next day, or slap happy. At least I was on a
747-400 series
, which is my favorite plane. Unfortunately, I was using
miles so I was stuck back in coach. These big birds
still amaze me that they can get off the ground. I just
can't imagine what our forefathers a hundred years
ago would say if they saw one of these things cruise over
them. I bet they would yell, "MARTIANS!" It really is a privilege
to step foot in one of these bad boys.
Well, I was only in Chicago for two hours, which was more than
enough time to go to the
Red Carpet Club
and download my email at 5am (3am PST).
I stirred up enough energy to walk over to my next flight
to
Cleveland
which was only 45 minutes and not enough time to even get a
cat nap in. Let's get this straight. I go to Cleveland for
one reason and one reason only, to see
Amber's family
, her niece , and
her grandparents
who were in from South Dakota. Not that Cleveland is a bad
place, it's just not one of my favorite... top 100 cities.
While the ladies did their thing, which amounted to going shopping
or hanging out at the house chatting,
the boys
went out and
played golf
. The women in their family can really shop and talk, that's
why we
golfed
so much. I like golfing in Cleveland because it's cheap
and casual. For nine holes it cost $7 and $5 for a cart.
With prices that low even the
woodchucks
came out. The weather was almost perfect while we were there
so we had lots of
dinners outside
. BTW: I forgot to mention the girls can cook too. I
ate well while I was there, which is not necessarily a good thing because
I'm pushing 207. I also tried my first
Steak'n'Shake
. If you live on the East Coast, it's kind of like a Friendly's,
except the shakes are awesome.
One reason Cleveland is not in my top 100 is because it has to be one of the most unfriendliest cities I have ever been too. I went to many stores and places and not one person smiled or said thank you. Not one. Not even at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which is the city's main tourist attraction. I made the statement to some friends who live there and they agreed.
We went to the Rock & Roll Hall with Amber's sister and cousin . The Hall was well worth the trip. They have 7 floors of memorabilia from the last 50 years, from Elvis to Brittany. My favorite was a film about John Lennon. Don't bother bringing your camera inside because they are not allowed . Location: One Key Plaza Cleveland, Ohio 44114 Prices : Adults: $17.00, Seniors (55+): $13.00, Children ages 9-11: $11.00.
Another must see is one of the city's fine sporting stadiums. My Dad and his girlfriend, Nancy, came out and met me at Jacob's Field because the Yankees were in town.
Listen, there are a lot
more places to go in Cleveland (such as the "Flats, West Side Market..........
) but I'll save that for my next trip. But I will say go to
Malley's Chocolates
. They have 14 locations throughout the area and they make some
damn good sweets and sundaes. (Maybe that's why I'm pushing the
scale to it's max?)
Whenever I'm in Cleveland,
I make the 100 mile trip to Erie, PA to see my sister and her family.
I wasn't there for more than 36 hours but I got a lot in. I
woke up at 5am to watch
Carol
do her Adopt-a-Pet segment on CBS, then took the kids to
Waldameer park
(their website
) to cool off on the
log ride
. Then we took a stroll along the
lake
and watched one of Lake Erie's incredible
sunsets
before I headed back to the Cleveland airport.
The Red Carpet club in CLE is small, dark, and unattended, (you push a code that they give you at check in to enter). Now I know why it's so small (because there was no one in there ). I flew to DEN where the Red Carpet Club is great. It's huge and has plenty of seats and snacks. Since apples and crackers aren't enough for my belly I walked over to Wolfgang Puck's (2nd floor between gates 37 and 38 at the United concourse) and had a great BBQ chicken sandwich. It was only $6, so I had to throw in a chocolate chip cookie. I brought that bad boy the plane and just went to town on it . When the flight attendant announced it was a no-food service flight, I felt like like I was around a bunch of caveman who haven't eaten in months. I could feel all the eyes watching me as their mouths watered. I almost stood up and said, "Hey, if you subscribed to Johnny Jet, then you would've known that the airlines cut back and to bring your own food, so STOP staring and log on." The best part of the flight wasn't the sandwich, nor was it the 747 that I was on. It was that I ran into one of my old colleagues and his family, that made the two hour flight fly by (No pun intended).
MEDIA ALERT
AIR EMAIL
I have been familiar with your site for a long time.
I haven't been to it for a while though. It's gotten bigger...better.
Just curious if you care to add a link for the
on-going gun issue
. I am in favor of this issue. Capt. Hudek

LEG FRACTURE
Most leg injuries are only sprains, but the treatment
is the same.
To stop bleeding, apply direct pressure to the wound
using bandages or clean clothes. If the skin is broken but there
is no bleeding, do not touch or put anything on the wound.
Do not move the injured leg. Make a splint from two
stiff objects of the same length -- wood, plastic or folded cardboard.
Put the splints on either side of the injured area, and tie them
together with rope, belts or adhesive tape. Do not tie too tight,
which could cut off blood circulation.
If help can't come to you, make sure the leg is immobilized
before moving.
Best: The injured person should remain on his/her
back until help arrives.
GOOD TO KNOW!
Renting a Car in Europe: Secrets You Need
to Know
Rules, hidden fees....it's not just Italian drivers
you have to worry about.
Renting a car in Europe can be expensive -- as
much as 40 percent higher than renting in the US. Add the high
cost of gasoline, highway tolls, and value-added taxes of 17 percent
or more, and having your own set of wheels becomes a pricey proposition.
There are also airport taxes to consider if you're picking up your
rental from the airport -- as well as steep parking fees in urban areas.
Having said that, however, there's no better way
to explore the European countryside than in a car.
If you're traveling solo, seeing Europe by car
is a luxury -- budget travelers should consider trains. But if
you're traveling with a companion or family, driving becomes more
affordable and allows both door-to-door accessibility and the
freedom to come and go at will. Renting can be tricky for first-timers,
however. Pricing, choosing a rental company, and deciding where
to book your rental are issues you'll want to decide ahead of time.
And keep your credit card handy. This is one situation where understanding
card-member benefits could save you money on costly insurance coverage.
