What a week for travel. The big news is USAir filed for Chapter 11 and United is flirting with the idea. USAir says operations aren't going to change but if I were you, I would protect yourself by booking weeks, not months, ahead of your travel date and make sure you buy your tickets with a credit card.

Now down to the fun stuff: I left you last week from Erie, PA and instead of flying out of town, I took Greyhound to Cleveland to visit Amber and her family. It only takes an hour and forty minutes and for $13 you can't beat it.  We were only in Cleveland for about 12 hours, which was just enough time to witness a wicked thunderstorm and to eat some good ol' midwest food that her family stirred up.  Speaking of food our breakfast on our flight from Cleveland to Denver wasn't too bad and, and wouldn't you know we left so early that our connecting flight to LAX, had the same meal.   The flights went by quickly because we bumped into one of Amber's friend from high school. Would you  believe we flew with Jeff not once, not twice but three times in the same week?

Jeff was in LA for business and he rented a car with Enterprise so we went with him to check out Enterprise's LAX operations and to get a free ride home. We were quite impressed with their operations, even though we would need a map to find the place again. Enterprise had two well dressed agents helping people on and off the shuttle bus with their bags and directing people to the counter, making everyone's experience very pleasant. Click here for Enterprise's website .

I worked my tail off this week getting the NEW & IMPROVED Johnny Jet portal launched. So PLEASE let us know how you like it or if you have any recommendations (Send email to Johnny@JohnnyJet.com ). Our goal is to make it the best travel website to research your trips and to help you find the best travel deals.

As you probably guessed it wasn't all work and no play. I did manage to go down to the Newport Beach Four Seasons for my friend Debbie Graham's wedding. If Debbie looks familiar it's probably because you're a tennis fan. Debbie just retired from the pro circuit last year after an amazing career, including the semifinals at Wimbledon.   The best part of the wedding for me was watching all the single women fight over the bouquet toss (Good thing Amber Airplane was out of town otherwise she would've been throwing some elbows like she did at our last tennis wedding :-).

I also made it down to the six man volleyball  tournament in my adopted hometown of Manhattan Beach.  If you are ever in Southern Cal in early August make sure you check it out because it's not only incredible V-Ball but it's hilarious.  All the teams dress up and play in costumes; most of the players are either pro or ex-pro volleyball players.  If I wasn't going out of town I would've had to put a Johnny Jet.com team together and kick some butt! I know excuses, excuses........  The fan favorite was definitely Team Fletch. They did not have the usual six guys dress up,  they had THIRTY!  They even brought a bull horn and after each win they would all start singing the Jeffersons (Old sitcom) theme song........."Movin on up..... to the sky... to that deluxe apartment ........."

Sorry I can't tell you who won since we were only there for a few minutes because we had to go home and pack our carry-ons so we could catch our flight to Chicago to have our monthly dinner with my cousins.  We flew on a phat 747 and got lucky with a seat upstairs .

We had a great time in  Chicago as usual and my cousin's who sell premiums for all the big companies made me these amazing Johnny Jet shirts as a late birthday present!  How happy am I?  We were only in town for 24 hours but were able to make the drive downtown to see how big my cousin Madeline got. Yes I know I  know you are probably thinking this guy has cousins everywhere, but what did you expect? I'm half Italian :-)

READER AIR-eMAIL
Hi Johnny!,  I had to write to you.  My friend Christine (who used to work at Smarter Living) has been sending me your newsletter.  I lived in Erie for about 6 years during some of high school and college, and worked at Waldameer every summer I was in town.  I was a manager there for a while.  I'm so glad that someone outside of Erie has actually heard of it!  It's awesome to see all of the pictures, and I'm glad you enjoy Thunder River so much... I'll send your link to the owners of the park--they'll be thrilled to see it!  Megan

GOOD TO KNOW!
TIME TO RENEW YOUR PASSPORT IS NOW

Passport fees being about to increase.  A standard ten year passport will increase from $60 to $85, and the extra you pay for expedited service increases from $35 to $60.  The Bureau of Consular Affairs explained that the increase was to recover 'the true cost of providing [passport and other] services'.  I don't understand why I can get a driver's license while I wait, and pay a mere $15 for the privilege (including having them take the photos) but a passport takes 6-8 weeks, two photos, and $85, or same day service for a massive $145 (and, no, it isn't because they do extensive computer background checks or anything like that!).  The new fees apply for applications received on/after 19 August.
I just got my haircut and the dude butchered me, then I went to Kinko's and the guy didn't know what he was doing so he ended up taking about 10 pictures in front of a crowded store.

What are the Fees?

Passports
A reasonable expeditor will charge a fee of roughly $85-$100 for passports processed within 9 days, and about $150 for those turned around within 3-8 days. This is in addition to the government fees, which are $85 for a new applicant, or $55 for a renewal. To have a visa expedited within 24 hours, you should expect to pay at least $200 to the expeditor. Shipping fees are additional; and many sites will give you a discount if you are processing a passport and a visa application, or more than one of either.
Visas
Most visa expeditors will charge a service fee of $30-$50 to process a tourist visa, and slightly more, around $50-$60, to process a business visa, for normal processing. If you want it sooner, you can expect to pay double. These fees come in addition to consulate and shipping fees. Consulate fees vary greatly depending on your destination. The most expensive visas are to Russia and the former Soviet Union, China, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.

Keep in mind that for a fee of $60 (in addition to the $85 cost for obtaining, or $55 for renewing) the US Passport Service will process expedited passports within three working days.
