JET?<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
This week I have spent most of my time in NYC. I love it here,
so much to do, everything is close (unlike L.A.), you don't need a car
(unlike L.A.), and the best food around (especially PIZZA!) . This
week the US Open is going on in Flushing Meadows (Queens). I was
fortunate enough to score a player's guest pass, which means I don't need
a ticket, and I can go everywhere but the girls locker room :-(
The best part about it is I can have lunch in the players private restaurant,
which is a lot better, and cheaper than the food court. One of my
biggest problems with the US Open being right next to Shea Stadium and
close to LGA airport is getting there. Who wants to drive, or get ripped
off by paying $25 for a taxi. I decided to venture out, and to see
what John Rocker (he's an idiot) was talking about with the 7
train. I got to tell you, if you are in NYC and you want to get
to the U.S. Open or Shea Stadium, all you need to do is take the subway.
It's sooo easy, really. I was on the east side, and I took the 6
train (subway) to Grand Central and connected to the 7, headed towards
Flushing, Queens (here's my buddy Andy & my girl Amber
waiting for the Subway). It only takes about 20 minutes and it
costs $1.50, you can't beat it (Buy a MetroCard
to save time). Don't listen to that rockhead because there were a
lot of normal people on the train (and abnormal, but that's what makes
NYC so interesting). When we arrived we watched some tennis: here
is a picture of Lisa
Raymond destroying her opponent on court 7, next door Kim
Po/Sidot play on court 8, which is where I caught up with some
of my old
friends.
Here is a funny story: One night
we all went to dinner to one of my favorite Thai restaurants on the upper
west side (Rain). As my cousin and I were walking to meet our dates
a big o'le cockroach ran by us, I said "DAMN, that thing should have a
collar on it". On the way back from dinner, my cousin's girlfriend
ran into my old friend without the collar, and she had a different reaction:
she screamed and high stepped (just like Dion Sanders) down the street.
When we caught up to her, she was almost hyperventilating. I said if you
were afraid of that little la coo ca racha, what are you going to
do when you look down. She just happened to be standing on top of the home.
I'm talking there were HUNDREDS, and BIG (I even almost got creeped out,
but I was laughing to hard). I thought she was going to have a heart attack.
It was that pause of disbelief, with the mouth wide open, you know before
reality kicked in, then BOOM! she was gone. This was probably one
of the funniest things I have seen in a while. Not only did she repeat
her actions from encounter 1, but this time she was jumping, and yelling.
She even ran into the street and held up traffic (I guess she felt it was
safer there in the light), my
cousin AJ had to pick her up and carry her to the car.
Until next week- Ciao

TIP OF
THE WEEK:
By Chris

Every frequent traveler should aim for membership in the hallowed elite
levels of airline programs. Why? When you get into elite levels, the airlines
treat you as a TRUE frequent flyer -- not just someone who has filled out
a membership application. As an elite member, you get r-e-s-p-e-c-t. Concentrating
your patronage with only one or two airlines will get you to the "elite"
levels of membership much faster. Most airlines offer basic elite membership
to those members who fly at least 25,000 miles per year.

GOOD TO KNOW!
Dear Johnny,
Thanks so much for the fast reply & the MAX MILES program...have
set it up..now must go thru all my years of paperwork & get all my
numbers.
I have not yet "used" any of my mileage on these many programs (If
put together would probably come to 75,000+ if they haven't "expired")
I use my AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD & get lots of "milage" credit from them.
Also, recently joined the SPRINT Long Distance service & by the end
of the year they will have credited me with 20,000 FF "mileage" (I'll have
to look up which airlines this is for...I'm thinking Northwest.) So Yes..I
am a "small timer" but will take your "sweet" advice to consolidate. Can
you recommend (knowing the above info)...which airline would give me the
most diversity of flying destinations from San Diego to just about anywhere?
Thanks again Luv, Christy
Christy,
Thanks for the emails. I went to one of my friends and experts Tim Winship who has a website: www.frequentflier.com and a great newsletter called The Frequent Flier Crier.:
Here's his advice--
Actually, the advice to consolidate applies first and foremost to earning
miles. It's much more difficult to consolidate after the fact,
since most programs don't allow members to transfer miles among different
programs.
So we're left trying to make a silk purse from the proverbial sow's
ear.
The good news is that you have substantial miles with Amex, and that's
one of the very few programs which does allow you to use your points for
miles in a number of different programs. But not, as we'll see, all
programs.
Living in San Diego, the best program for you would almost certainly
be United's Mileage Plus. That's simply because United has by far more
flights into and out of San Diego, which means you'd have a wide range
of choices when it comes to redeeming your miles.
The bad news is that United is not an Amex partner, so you cannot convert
your Amex points into United miles. However, you can convert
Amex points into miles in the Delta SkyMiles program. And since United
is a partner in Delta's program, you can redeem SkyMiles for a free
flight on United. But (and there's almost always a 'but'), United awards
in the Delta program are domestic-only. Of course you could use Delta or
one of their international airline partners for an overseas award,
if that's the goal.
As a second choice, if you have your sights set on an international
award, you might also consider transferring your Amex points into the
Continental program. I don't recommend Continental as a long-term solution,
though, since they have very few flights from San Diego. So
you would have to make lots of connections in Houston or Los Angeles.
As for the Northwest miles you've earned for using Sprint, I'd suggest
you continue to earn them until you reach 25,000 miles (since you're so
close at this point), and then use them for a domestic award ticket.
Going forward, you might want to consider... yes, consolidating! Join
the United program to earn miles whenever you fly on United or any of
the many program partners. Use the United credit card to earn miles
for purchases. And change from Sprint to MCI to earn United miles for long
distance. That way you'll avoid the problems associated with trying
to make use of different programs' miles.
Enjoy!
Tim
