JOHNNY
JET?<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I must admit I was a teensy bit afraid to fly
after the attacks, I think because there has been so much negative press
on the whole airline industry that it gave me some unusual jitters.
But I took President Bush's advice and listened to my gut and got on a
plane, actually four. I heard about the nightmare traffic at LGA
and JFK, so I decided to fly out of HPN (White Plains, NY). My first
flight was at 7:50am and I got my Dad out of bed to take Amber and I. We
didn't get in the car till 6:45am and then cruised 25 minutes down the
Merrit Parkway. When we turned onto the airport road --- BHAM!
Roadblock.
Three State troopers were lined up checking every single car inside and
out (one per car) and all the passengers ID's. Luckily they moved
quickly and there was no line at the check in counter. It was also good
to see the gate agents friendly and happy. The security check point
had the normal not so qualified security checkers (but they were trying
hard), and a handful of State Police. I made it through without beeping,
but they still gave me and everyone else the wand. I made the BIG
mistake of taking a picture of Amber going through security. Right when
the flash went off a security dude was all over me. He told me "I need
your film". I said: "It's digital it doesn't have film, but I can erase
it". He didn't seem to know what digital meant and kept demanding my film.
He called a policeman over for support (I thought for sure I was
either going to jail or I was losing my camera) but I kept cool and
gave the guys a demonstration on how the camera works and showed them I
deleted it. It worked, Thank God.
We
flew United airlines to Chicago on a 737
which holds around 120 people but this one only had 15 (FIFTEEN!)
total passengers. The whole experience was weird, it just didn't feel the
same. I don't know maybe it was the plastic
knife, but I think it was just the hype. When we landed in O'Hare
at 9am it was depressingly quiet (compared to the normal traffic). I was
starting to get worried until we went up to the Red Carpet Club and realized
that's where everyone was hiding. The place was packed, and it snapped
me out of the funk. It was business as usual and it was a pleasant
sight. If these guys are flying you should be too! These people know
travel better than anybody, well not me of course, but you know what I
mean. They wouldn't be risking their lives if it wasn't safe, so get on
a plane.
I walked to my gate which was in the "C" Concourse
and guess who I bumped into? That's right the
main dude from the United Safety Video. His name is Joe G. and
he's a cool guy.
I got to the gate before they started boarding
so I could check out everyone getting on the A
320 plane (Just to make sure no one looked suspicious or was acting
funny). I was sitting in an exit row aisle in case there were any terrorists
on board I could get up quickly and bust them in the head ( I know you
and everyone else would do the same). It was calm as usual until
the knuckle head purser made his routine announcements after take off.
This bozo starts off by saying "Um, we have a situation up here".... Everyone
instantly drops their reading materials and conversations and looks up.
He says "we weren't expecting so many passengers today, so we are going
to be way short of meals". Everyone takes a big sigh of relief (normally
people would be yelling and screaming, but suddenly eating wasn't a priority).
Turns out there was enough food and the flight to L.A. was smooth and uneventful.
LAX
was a busier than O'Hare, but there you can NOT pick/drop people up/off
at the curb, only at Parking Lot B which is away from the terminals.
Only Taxis, Limos and shuttles can go curb side. It's kind of a joke because
they don't search them or check their ID's. L.A. was fun, but short.
On Sunday I had a 6:30am flight to ORD (O'Hare). The taxi picked me
up at 5am and I was in the airport - and through security by 5:18. Not
bad huh? But don't let me misguide you. I am fortunate to have elite status
with United and there was no line at that counter, otherwise I would still
be there waiting. Unless you have priority status make sure you show up
early otherwise you will miss the plane because they have been on time
lately. In fact every flight on the departure screen was on time, and all
the arrivals were either on time or 20 minutes early (When was the last
time you saw that?). Supposedly United has been 85% on time since
Sept. 11. Wouldn't you know it my flight to Chicago was delayed 40
minutes on the runway, but I didn't care because I was on my favorite type
of aircraft... a 747-400
(and I got to sit upstairs for the first time in 8 years).
I spent 16 hours in Chicago and was up again at the crack of dawn. I
left downtown at 5:00am, took a taxi to the Blue Line (train) to ORD. You
should've seen the security lines to get into the gate area (I wanted to
take a picture but I knew better), it had to be the longest security line
ever. It was 5:45 and I was worried I was going to miss my 7am departure,
that's how long it was. I was standing in the back of the line like a zombie
(everyone else was too) when I see this security guy waving people on to
come to his check point. Everyone must've of thought it was too good to
be true and didn't want to chance losing their place in line. I rubbed
my eyes because I thought I was dreaming but I had nothing to lose, and
to my surprise I was on the other side in less than a minute. I looked
at the clock and ran to the 6am departure to LGA. I was able to catch
the earlier flight and was the last to board the packed 727.
Would you believe I went door to door three hours and thirty minutes (that's
faster than I have ever done it). Not bad, huh?
I can't stress it enough, I was nervous like everyone else about flying.
The attacks on September 11 affected all of us. But let's face it, we weren't
ready for the sucker punch that they delivered. We are now.
This week I flew on four types of planes (including the biggest) and visited
four different airports (including the busiest). Each trip got better and
better and more crowded. It's a great time to take advantage of those
air fare sales and travel. I know I will. Cheap airfares and double
mile offers? That's like a dream come true :-).
Don't forget statistically you have a better chance of being struck
by lighting than having your flight hijacked or crashing.
Other Notes and Tips:
NOTE: As a gesture of appreciation to its most loyal customers,
American Airlines is extending elite-status memberships for AAdvantage
Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Gold members through
February 2003.
Expect the other airlines to follow too!
TIP: Customers traveling on E-Tickets will need to have a printed
copy of their E-TicketSM receipt or confirmation email as proof of travel
in order to pass through security checkpoints to check in at the gates.
We would like to hear your travel experiences
and thoughts about flying after September 11.
We will post responses in next week's Johnny Jet.
Here is one from our very own Jet Talk Writer Marc
Meredith.

TIP OF
THE WEEK:
By June Sandercock
Wear Comfy Shoes!
Rushing around or walking great distances can
be miserable for business travelers who are wearing uncomfortable, formal
business shoes. Protect your feet and improve your travel experience by
wearing casual shoes when en route. If you'll be on your feet all day,
for instance at a trade show, wear comfortable shoes; women may want to
wear flats.
