Greetings from Connecticut. I forgot to mention in last week's issue (I have been forgetting a lot lately) a helpful tip. We were in Erie, PA and my Dad needed to get back to CT.  My Dad called USAir and it was $450 one way out of Erie to LGA, then I said "I can beat that". I called American, and asked for a price out of Buffalo (100 miles away). With 8 hours advance notice, a one way ticket to JFK was $104 (the beauty of alternate airports). I told my Dad, and said $104! That's awesome.  I said the only problem is it's out of Buffalo, and on a prop. He said how do I get Buffalo, I said your choices are: you can get a car service for $135, or rent a car for $50.   He chose US Air. All that work for nothing (that's why I am not a travel agent).
This week I was in Chicago, L.A., and now cold CT.  I went to Chicago to hang out with Amber. The weather there was great, as you can see we were watching my Yankees in a bar with the doors wide open That's my cousin Dennis on the right, and the creator of the Johnny Jet logo, Craig. I didn't do much in Chicago but feel sorry for myself, then instead of going back to CT, I decided to go home to L.A. (for the first time in a month) to get my life organized, pay bills, get new clothes..... The weather in L.A., was cooler than Chicago, and rainy. It's such a joke when it rains in L.A., it's always the top new story; STORM WATCH! It's drizzling out, and that's the headline? The funniest thing I saw was from Fox news. They were interviewing people in the rain, and they were calling them RAIN VICTIMS. How pathetic is that?  I decided to take advantage of the cheap airfares, and go spend time with my Dad in CT. So here I am, and on Sunday it snowed. That's right, the first October snowfall in 21 years. It warmed up a bit for the Halloween trick or treater's. Here is a pic of my buddy Michael from Smarterliving.com and Amber. They were in town so I decided to show them the most famous landmark in Norwalk (besides Pepperidge Farms). Stew Leonards, the worlds largest dairy story. How I love their chocolate Chip cookies and brownies :-).

• Cultural Awareness Can Make or Break Deals

Cultural training has become more important as more and more business is done overseas. In fact, today it's a necessity. Every country has its own traditions and customs, including those for business. You know the old saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." That's particularly appropriate for business dealings. Awareness of local customs and traditions can help you handle problematic situations and increase your odds for success. Where can you get the specific cultural training you need? Here are some ways:
--Search the Internet using keywords such as "cultural awareness," "international business," "doing business in Japan," etc. Start broad and further define your search from there.
--Call your Chamber of Commerce and ask if they provide these services or can refer you to someone who does. Many Chambers have an international business organization.
--Call the international club at your local university and ask for a referral to someone from the country you'll be visiting or to an ethnic association.

I heard about your site on www.looksmart.com -- in the "Question and Answer" section -- I've been "power housing" (if that's a term) in answering questions, in order to gain "clickrewards" which, in turn, I send off to my American Airlines account.
FYI, if folks are looking to "earn" frequent flier points, they can get 100 for every ten questions they answer on the LookSmart site (the ratio was 100 to 5 answers, but that changed on August 31 -- so now it's only "half" as good -- but I have earned more than 40,000 clickrewards (a European airfare in off season... not too shabby... and if I recall, last year American Airlines reduced that redemption to 30,000 around Christmas/end of year because so few flights were sold -- hoping they do it again!) In order to "set up" the LookSmart "thing" a person should first go to www.clickrewards.com and set up a clickrewards account -- then go to the "Features" (or something like that) section on the left hand column of that page, scroll down, and you'll find the link to www.looksmart.com -
Here's another tip for getting 500 miles from Alaska or Delta -- go to www.greenpoints.com and become a member -- do a few "clicks" and "downloads" answer a few surveys, etc. to get (I believe) 2,500 or maybe it's 2,400 "greenpoints" which you, in turn, redeem for a certificate that they will mail you for 500 miles on either of those two systems (they had an American Airlines certificate, but that promotion ended on August 19) -- for the most part www.greenpoints.com is pretty lame -- but it only takes about 10 minutes to get enough points for the certificate -
