>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>WHERE'S
JOHNNY
JET?<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Hello from Phoenix! I am back on the road traveling, and feeling lucky.
This week I spent some time with family and friends on the West Coast.
Cruised down to Newport for dinner,
ate at Bandera's (it's owned by Houston's) and it is good, especially the
corn bread :-). I also went to my buddy
Chris
B's 32nd B-Day party. There's nothing like a good B-Day party.
Here I'm pictured with my Cousin
Nicole (CBS newscaster in Seattle), and cousin-in-law Joey (You
probably seen him before modeling off those Johnny Jet T-shirts).
As you can tell I ate a lot, and started to gain back the 15
pounds I lost. While I was out putting the pounds on a freaky thing happened
to me. I was finishing dinner at a Chinese restaurant with my girl,
when I opened up my fortune cookie, and it read: "Somebody Misses You".
I almost busted out in tears. I have never received a fortune like that
before (usually they say, you are going to be rich, or you're a wise man
(which the latter is true:-). Have any of you ever received a fortune like
that? On that note, I made a webpage for My
Mom. Check it out and let me know what you think.
I do have a tip for you:
I am staying at the host hotel here in Phoenix, and the conference
rate was $180 a night. I do not like to pay top dollar, so I went into
my daily routine (when I don't book on the Internet) and went down the
line with my discount cards until one... finally hit. They told me
I could get a rate for $125, if I had a Triple A card. I said: "I
sure am a member", of course I wasn't. When I called the day before to
confirm my reservation, they said "make sure you bring your card",
I said "what if I don't, they said $180". Before the front desk could hang
up, they could hear me dialing AAA. I ordered a card over the phone
for $63 (that's for first time members, then $43 annually). It's actually
a great deal, because most hotels offer a substantial discount with it,
and you never know when your car is going to break down. I had the
guy fax me over my conf. #, that way their wouldn't be any problems, and
their wasn't. Do you know why? The receptionist didn't even ask me for
the card. Can you believe it!
BTW: I decided to practice what I preach. Remember how I said I was
going to go to Singapore for a conference? Well, I decided to refund that
ticket (yeah I know 52,000 miles down the drain), and busted out 240,000
miles for 2 first class tickets. This time my Pops will be flying the friendly
skies (he's never been first class before, so it should be great (except
if he snores, which you know he will like a mad man from being Jet Lagged.
Thank God for those amenity kits with ear plugs).

THE WEEK:

Get creative with Ticketing
Business travelers typically fly midweek and cannot take advantage of cheaper airfares that require a Saturday night stayover. Unfortunately, this forces the cost-conscious to bend the rules in order to find affordable fares. While the airlines consider the practice unethical--because they feel that you are being deceptive--some travelers opt for "creative" ticketing strategies to save money.

Holiday Tipping Guidelines from
Peggy Post
According to Peggy Post, director of the Emily Post Institute, Inc.,
there's no better time than the winter holiday season to say ``thank you''
to people who have served you throughout the year.
Tips on Holiday Tipping
``One way of giving a gift that says 'thank you' is to consider giving
a tip. Whether to tip and how much to give vary widely,'' says Post. ``Make
your own decisions based on your budget, how pleased you are with service
and regional customs.''
Post offers these guidelines for holiday tipping:
With cash or personal checks, there is potential for several inconveniences.
The recipient of a personal check needs to first deposit or cash the check
before purchasing the gift -- an intermediate step that can subtly undermine
the connection between purchase of the gift and the memory of the gift-giver.
And with personal checks or cash, there's also the possibility of loss
or theft.
By contrast, American Express Gift Cheques do not need to be deposited,
and are fully replaceable if lost or stolen.
For maximum flexibility, Gift Cheques are available in denominations
of $25, $50 and $100. A minimal purchase fee is applied to each cheque.
To use, the recipient simply signs the American Express Gift Cheque upon
receipt and countersigns it at point of purchase.
Gift Cheques can be purchased at a number of outlets including banks,
credit unions and AAA offices, and all domestic American Express Travel
Service Offices. Consumers can also order Gift Cheques via phone toll free
at 800-828-GIFT.
American Express introduced Gift Cheques in 1987 in response to popular
demand for a monetary gift product that offers thoughtfulness, elegance
and convenience. For more information, visit http://www.americanexpress.com/giftcheques

in Business.'' She also pens monthly columns for Good Housekeeping, Parents
and Bride Again magazines, and is a regular contributor to http://www.women.com
